Raining in Haldwani? 8 Indoor Places to Chill With Friends

Every "places to visit in Haldwani" list you will find was written for someone passing through on the way to Nainital. Temples, the Gaula barrage, a picnic by the river, Bhimtal on day two. All fine — and all completely useless at 6 PM on a wet Tuesday when you live here and three friends are asking where to meet.

Haldwani genuinely does not have many indoor options. So here is the honest list, including places that are not ours, and what actually stays open late.

First: what the rain rules out

Worth saying plainly, because most guides will send you to these without mentioning the weather. Gaula River and the barrage, Sir Dorabji Tata Park, Sanjay Van, the viewpoints, the Banjara Market stretch — all of it is a washout in monsoon, and the riverbank is genuinely not safe when the Gaula is running high.

Mandi Bazaar is half-covered. You can shop it in light drizzle if you accept wet feet. In real rain, don't.

Walkway Mall

The obvious answer, and for good reason — it is the only proper mall in the city. Cinema, food court, branded shops, all under one roof on NH-87 at Thapa Colony. If your group cannot agree on anything, this is the safe default: someone shops, someone eats, someone watches a film.

The catch is that everybody else has the same idea on a wet weekend, so the food court gets loud and the cinema fills. Go on a weekday if you have the choice.

A cafe you can actually sit in for two hours

Haldwani's cafe scene has improved a lot. Ministry of Chai is the one people mention most for sitting and talking, and there are several decent options around the main market and Kaladhungi Road.

One honest word of advice: check the seating before you commit a group of six. A lot of places here are built for two people and a quick coffee, not a table of friends settling in for the evening. If you are more than four, ring ahead.

VR, PS5 and the racing rig

This is us, so read it with that in mind — but it is also the reason we opened. There was nowhere in Haldwani to sit down with friends and actually do something for two hours that did not involve eating or shopping.

Rain is our busiest weather, and it is not subtle. The room is air-conditioned, the sofas recline, and a group of four on one PS5 works out at ₹75 each for the hour. VR is ₹250 an hour and it is the thing people talk about afterwards — though fair warning, if you get carsick easily, start with thirty minutes at ₹150.

The sim racing rig is the one we would push you towards if you have only ever raced with a controller. Force-feedback wheel, proper pedals, a seat you sit down into. An hour on it ruins controller racing for you permanently.

The 9D and 7D cinemas

5D Max Entertainment has run a 9D VR cinema and a small 7D theatre in the city since 2016. Short experiences rather than a whole evening — think fifteen minutes, not two hours — but genuinely good fun with a group, and cheap.

Pair it with something else. It is not enough to fill a night on its own.

Eat your way through it

An underrated wet-evening plan: pick three places and treat it as a crawl rather than a meal.

• Bal mithai and singori from a proper Kumaoni sweet shop. If you have out-of-town friends visiting, this is the thing to put in front of them.
• Aloo ke gutke with bhang chutney — the local dish worth ordering over another plate of noodles.
• Momos and thukpa around Kathgodam road, which is exactly what you want in cold rain.
• Chhole bhature if it is early enough to still count as breakfast.

Most of the good spots for these are small and street-facing, so you will get slightly wet between stops. That is part of it.

If it turns out dry

Then take the outdoor option, honestly — it is better than anything indoors, and it is free.

The Gaula riverbank in the hour before sunset is genuinely lovely and about ten minutes from most of the city. Sir Dorabji Tata Park is the easy pick if you just want to sit and talk somewhere green. And if you have a full day and someone with a car, Bhimtal and Jeolikot are close enough to go and come back the same evening.

None of that competes with a river at golden hour. We are not going to pretend otherwise.

Planning a birthday or a bigger group?

This is where Haldwani is genuinely short on options, and it is worth planning ahead rather than hoping.

Party venues in town quote per head and it adds up quickly for ten people. Booking several gaming setups on one order works out considerably cheaper and the whole group plays at the same time — four on a PS5, another two on the wheel and the PC, everyone in the same room. From about four people upwards it works well as a birthday.

For anything larger, call ahead so the slots can be blocked properly. Turning up with nine people and hoping is how a birthday goes wrong.

What is actually open late

The thing nobody tells you: Haldwani closes earlier than you would expect for a city this size. Most of the market winds down well before the mall does.

We are open every day, 9 AM to 10 PM, and the last session can start at 10. For everywhere else on this list, ring before you set off on a wet evening — small places here close early when the weather kills their footfall, and there is nothing worse than a soaked ride to a shuttered door.

The short version

Raining and you need somewhere indoors: Walkway Mall if the group cannot agree, a cafe if you want to talk, gaming if you want to actually do something, a food crawl if you want it cheap. If it clears up, go to the river instead.
